Nash sparks Suns to victory over Nuggets
PHOENIX (AP)—Steve Nash has a reputation as one of the best clutch shooters in the NBA. He added to his credentials Saturday night.

Nash scored eight straight points in the final 3 minutes and the Phoenix Suns beat the Denver Nuggets for the eighth straight time at home, 108-101.

Nash’s first big basket gave the Suns a 101-98 lead. After Chauncey Billups tied it with a 3-pointer, Nash connected on two 3-pointers, giving Phoenix a 107-101 lead. A free throw by Shaquille O’Neal completed the scoring.

“I’ve seen him do it so many times,” Denver coach George Karl said of Nash. “Nash is Nash. He’s special.”

Nash was only 2-of-8 from the field before his late spree.

“I don’t know if he had that plan (to shoot),” Karl said. “Once he made the first one (of his 3s), I knew the second one was in.”

Phoenix coach Terry Porter also has witnessed many of Nash’s heroics.

“He’s proven he can do it,” Porter said. “He did a great job tonight. That was just what we needed. He came up big for us.”

Nash downplayed his late efforts.

“I just tried to be aggressive and look for opportunities for us to win the game,” Nash said. “I was just fortunate to make some tonight that helped us win.”

Nash finished with 16 points and 11 assists. Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 27 points and 10 rebounds—his 10th game in a row with at least 20 points. O’Neal had 19 points and nine rebounds, Jason Richardson also scored 19, and Grant Hill had 11.

Hill also did a strong job on Carmelo Anthony, holding the Nuggets’ leading scorer to 10 points—11 below his average.

“Old man Grant did a heck of a job on that young fellow Melo, really making him work for a lot of things tonight and didn’t give him anything easy,” Porter said.

Stoudemire, who led the Suns in rebounding for the seventh straight game, said, “My thing is I just go out there and play hard. Whenever coach comes to me and says, ‘We need you to do this more,’ I’m always down to accept the challenge.”

The 101 points were the fewest allowed by Phoenix in 12 games. This was their fifth straight victory at home.

“Down the stretch we did a solid job,” Stoudemire said. “We got stops and rebounded the ball. That’s something we’ve got to continue to do to close out games.”

Reserve JR Smith topped the Nuggets with 23 points.

Nene added 20 points and 15 rebounds for Denver, Billups had 18 points and eight assists, Kenyon Martin scored 13 points, and Linas Kleiza had 10.

The loss dropped the Nuggets to 17-10 and into a tie with idle Portland for first place in the Northwest Division.

The Suns, whose objective was to improve their defense this season, have yielded at least 100 points in 12 consecutive games.

Both teams shot exceptionally well in the first half that was marked by a series of runs and ended tied at 58.

Smith was the most productive player of the half, scoring 18 points, 15 in the second quarter. He hit four of eight 3-pointers and his final field goal of the second period gave the Nuggets their biggest lead, 50-41 with 6:45 to go. But the Suns rallied and went ahead 58-56 on two free throws by Nash with 7.5 seconds remaining. Billups tied it for the fourth time with two foul shots with 3.9 seconds left.

Nene also had a big half for the Nuggets, scoring 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds, four off the offensive glass, one more than the entire Suns team had.

The Suns’ largest lead of the half was 10 points, 17-7, as they hit eight of their first nine shots. Denver then went on a 16-2 burst and went ahead 23-19 on Smith’s first 3-pointer.

Again the Suns came back and led 29-28 after the first quarter when Stoudemire contributed 11 points. By the half, Stoudemire had 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Denver made 53.5 percent (23-of-43) of its field-goal attempts in the half, while the Suns hit 51.2 (21-of-41).

The score was tied twice and there were five lead changes in the third quarter before the Suns scored eight consecutive points, including 3-pointers by Hill and Richardson, and took the lead 78-73. A late field goal by Martin and a 3-pointer by Kleiza cut the Suns’ advantage to 85-82 by the end of the period.

If the Suns maintain their current position atop the league in field goal percentage, it would be the fifth year in a row they would win that title. … On the other hand, they are the worst in turnovers per game and 28th in offensive rebounding. … Denver, which allowed an average of 107 points per game last season, is holding opponents under 100 this year and allowing them to shoot less than 43 percent, third best in the league, just behind Boston and Cleveland in that category. … Nuggets center Steven Hunter has yet to play this season, following right knee surgery. … The Suns play only one game in the next eight days, at home against San Antonio on Christmas Day.

Magic overcome Bryant’s big night, win 106-103
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Kobe Bryant did his job. The Orlando Magic did, too.

The Los Angeles star scored a season-high 41 points, but Magic center Dwight Howard made eight of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter, and Jameer Nelson had 27 points to lead Orlando to a 106-103 victory over the Lakers on Saturday night.

“ESPN magazine did a story about how to defend LeBron James,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy joked. “I don’t think anybody is coming to me for that gig about defending Kobe. We better keep winning games, so I can stay employed.”

Bryant missed a three at the buzzer that would have sent the game to overtime. He made 14 of 31 shots, and all 11 of his free throws.

“They had three guys over at me every time (in the second half),” Bryant said. “When I get going, they send everybody.

Orlando survived despite early foul trouble for Howard. Nelson had 15 points in the third quarter to lead the Magic back from an nine-point halftime deficit.

“I think it was really a good thing that I missed those two games,” Howard said. “One, for me, giving rest for my body. And two, for my teammates that they can win without me, and do a lot of great things and trust each other.”

Rashard Lewis added 22 points for Orlando, which has won six straight home games. Derek Fisher had 27 in support of Bryant.

In the last three days the Magic swept Western Conference contenders San Antonio and Los Angeles, giving them credibility as force for the NBA title.

“We believe we’re contenders,” Nelson said. “The naysayers say we’re not. This means a lot. I think it’s a statement game. It shows we’re serious and we’re contenders for the East.”

The Lakers lost their last two games on last-minute shots.

“Those things are going to happen when you’re on the road,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “Those shots are more friendly at home, I guess.”

Van Gundy said the Magic beat the Lakers at their best.

“It’s hard for me for anyone to make a case the Lakers had a bad game,” Van Gundy said.

Los Angeles, which fell to Miami on Friday night, lost two straight games for the first time this season.

Howard, playing his second outing after missing a pair of games with a sore knee, had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

“He wanted the ball,” Van Gundy said. “He really played well in the second half.”

The Magic improved to 21-6.

“I’m not trying to lie to you. It feels good in perspective. But it counts as one (victory),” Van Gundy said.

Orlando held a lead late in the fourth quarter, and foul-plagued Howard hit a pair of free throws with just over a minute left. Rashard Lewis hit one of two free throws in the final minute to put the Magic up to stay.

Nelson hit a long jumper to tie it at 78 late in the third quarter, with the Magic using six 3s to get back in the game.

Bryant had 25 first-half points as the Lakers took a 58-49 halftime lead.

The Magic made 12 of 33 3s. … Los Angeles is on a five-game trip. The Lakers return home to play NBA champion Boston on Dec. 25.

Wade, Heat stifle Lakers to snap skid
MIAMI (AP)—Dwyane Wade watched the ball leave Kobe Bryant's hand and sail toward the basket, just as time expired. He watched it drop over the front of the rim, then bounce tantalizingly, adding even more drama to a suspenseful ending.

Finally, the ball fell away.

「About time we got a break,」 Wade said.

As the saying goes, the Miami Heat made their own breaks Friday night.

Wade snapped out of a mild slump with 35 points, and the Heat defense stifled the high-powered Los Angeles Lakers' in ways no opponent has managed this season on the way to an 89-87 victory over the reigning Western Conference champions.

Miami held the Lakers to a season low in points, forced 21 turnovers—Los Angeles' second-highest total of the year—and survived the final dagger that Bryant, the league's MVP, could hoist their way.

「It was going down, then just popped out,」 said Bryant, who led the Lakers (21-4) with 28 points. 「Happens sometimes.」

Bryant made a spinning jumper from the left side of the lane to get the Lakers within two points with 41.7 seconds left, but his final shot from just a couple steps farther back simply wouldn't go down.

「Shows that we've grown up a little bit,」 Heat forward Udonis Haslem said, after Miami (13-12) snapped a three-game slide.

For Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, everything is always about defense, continuing the mantra he learned from former coach and team president Pat Riley, his mentor on the Miami sideline.

And perhaps the quintessential defensive moment of the season came in the final seconds.

Miami led by two and the Lakers pounded the ball inside, looking to tie the game. Lamar Odom's 8-footer was blocked by Joel Anthony, and Odom's attempt at a follow-up was blocked by Wade. Pau Gasol gathered that loose ball—and Wade erased his shot attempt as well.

「Just a fantastic effort defensively at the very end,」 Spoelstra said.

The Lakers' previous low this season was 93 points, and their 21 turnovers represented their second-highest total of the season.

Daequan Cook scored 14 points and Shawn Marion had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Miami, which saw most of a 12-point lead entering the fourth disappear.

Gasol had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who also got 13 points from Derek Fisher and 12 from Jordan Farmar.

「We just did not get ourselves going,」 Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. 「We had a terrible third quarter.」

A third quarter that came with a spectacular ending, courtesy of Wade.

The game was tied after each of the first two quarters, and was nip-and-tuck again for much of the third before Miami took control in the final minutes of the period.

A 13-2 run over the final 3:33 gave Miami a 75-63 lead entering the fourth, and Wade delivered both the set up and knockout blows of the quarter. He found Cook for a 3-pointer that gave Miami a nine-point edge, and after losing the ball with 5 seconds left in the period, came through with another entry for his burgeoning highlight reel.

Stripped by Trevor Ariza near the 3-point line, Wade dove over the sprawled-out Lakers defender and collected the ball near halfcourt, dribbled to gather himself and let a 32-footer fly in desperation.

It dropped as time expired, and Wade posed on one knee as Ariza—who was still seated on the floor—only shook his head in disbelief.

「I knew it had a good chance of going in,」 Wade said. 「And how'd you all like my pose?」

The Lakers held Miami scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth, but never got the margin lower than four until the final minutes.

And by then, there simply wasn't enough time for Bryant and the Lakers to shake the Heat.

「It's a loss,」 Bryant said. 「You regroup and you get back to work.」

TJ Ford Injured Again!

T.J. Ford has feeling in his arms and legs, and will stay in an Atlanta hospital overnight for further evaluation after suffering a back and neck injury in a hard fall on Tuesday night.

T.J. Ford fell hard onto his back and neck after a flagrant foul from Hawks' rookie Al Horford on Tuesday, finishing with 26 points and eight assists on 11-of-15 shooting before leaving the game.

Ford, who missed and entire 2004-2005 season with a spinal injury, lay motionless on the court for serveral minutes before being carried off on a stretcher with 1:32 left in the game. Horford was ejected for a Flagrant 2, although he appeared to be going for the ball rather than to purposefully inflict injury. He was reportedly able to move his extremities, but that was the case with his last injury as well.

Vince Carter leaves game with ankle injury

Vince Carter was having a fine game against the Celtics on Saturday, when he drove the lane for a big slam dunk with 1:23 to play in the third quarter. His left foot came down after the dunk, but his right foot rolled under him after landing on Paul Pierce's foot. He grimaced and limped off the court after a while, without returning.

Carter, who was wearing a nearly knee-high boot on his right foot after the game, said, "I don't know, we'll see what happens. I'll see how it feels tomorrow and we'll go from there. I don't want to put a timetable on it." It is classified as a "sprain", which is actually good news for Carter. He definitely needs to be pulled from next week's lineups until further information surfaces. Nov. 11 - 1:24 am et

HOUSTON -- Dikembe Mutombo plans on wagging his index finger at rejected dunkers for one more season.

The NBA's second all-time leading shot blocker re-signed with the Rockets Monday for what he expects to be his final season.

"I'm going to enjoy every second and every minute of my last year in the NBA," Mutombo said. "I hope that my farewell tour will be a nice and memorable one."

Mutombo, the league's oldest player at 41, considered retirement after the Rockets' first-round playoff setback to the Utah Jazz. He was disappointed with his reduced role in the postseason as well as the team's earlier-than-expected exit.

But after having dinnner with former Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon, Mutombo decided he didn't want to leave the game on a bitter note.

"I think I was more hurt than anybody on the team," Mutombo said. "As I was getting ready to go home for the summer, I was approached by Hakeem Olajuwon. I talked to him over dinner for almost three hours. He just lifted me up and told me, 'Don't walk away from the game because you got hurt from the loss. You can stay around, even play one more year. Finish up and be happy. Maybe next year can be a better one.' I felt like something very positive came from him."

Mutombo is widely considered one of the greatest defensive players in NBA history. The eight-time All-Star passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for second on the all-time blocked shots list last season and has been the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year four times.

Since joining the Rockets in 2004, he has served as Yao Ming's backup. He provided the team with a major lift last season when Yao was injured, averaging 5.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in 33 starts.

However, Mutombo is hopeful that he won't have to fill in for Yao again this season.

"I'm too old to be going out there and playing 37 minutes again," Mutombo joked.
